Oceans and Human Health: Opportunities and Impacts, Second Edition

More than 100 international authors have come together to explore the interconnected and complex relationship between the health of both the oceans and humans.

The body of work comes at a time when the pressing issues of biodiversity and human health are at the forefront of the global agenda. International leaders have recently made a commitment to conserve 30% of our lands, waters, and ocean by 2030 (30×30) and the UN declared this as the Ocean Decade. In this context, the chapters provide vital scientific evidence to underpin activities and decision-making in education, policy, and communities.

We led the writing of Chapter 17 (The People of The Seas and The Seas of The People) that uses the concept of place to understand the relationship between human societies and the seas. We looked at various case studies around the world to see the concrete examples of how coastal communities form a strong bond with the seas, which provide not only sustenance but also meanings and memories. These intangible aspects of human connection with the seas are important to ensure sustainable future for the planet.
